Corona and fertility treatment / pregnancy - no increased risk

We give the all clear - there is no increased risk for a pregnancy due to a corona infection. A recent study at the University of Copenhagen shows that women who develop COVID-19 during early pregnancy do not have an increased risk of child deformities or miscarriage.

According to a current study, neither a higher risk of pregnancy nor a higher risk of loss of pregnancy could be demonstrated in corona infected women. The thickness of the neck transparency, which is measured in the first trimester and usually provides information about possible malformations in a child, does not differ significantly in the pregnant participants with SARS-CoV-2 infection in early pregnancy compared to those without SARS-CoV- 2 infection. However, the findings explicitly do not apply to women in whom the COVID-19 disease has taken a severe course, for example with the need for hospitalization. Therefore, caution is still advised in pregnant women who can be assigned to a risk group.

Do not postpone pregnancy or a fertility treatment despite Corona

“The issue of fertility doesn't just begin with treatment, but much earlier. The fertility of women drops from the age of 33. Many couples wait far too long to seek help." explains Univ. Prof. Dr. Heinz Strohmer, one of our founders and head of the Kinderwunschzentrum. He continues: "Corona should not unsettle couples and make them push their fertility treatment or a pregnancy even further into the future."

From the lockdown to your baby

The study was conducted for a valid reason: pregnant women are generally susceptible to viral infections. The study, which was carried out during the first corona wave in Denmark, involved 1,356 pregnant women. The sample was therefore large enough to generate meaningful findings.

“The study results are encouraging, as many women are concerned about becoming infected during pregnancy. In principle, however, there is nothing wrong with getting pregnant in healthy women. The renewed lockdown can also be seen as an opportunity to lower your personal stress level, to calm down and to dedicate yourself more to yourself and your own needs. These are good prerequisites for tackling the issue of pregnancy preparation. So there is nothing to be said against using the lockdown time and preparing for a long-awaited pregnancy, ”said Prof. Strohmer in conclusion.
