Implantation center for infertility couples
Couples who start their fertility journey with us naturally hope to get pregnant on their first IVF cycle - and we hope so too! However, the pregnancy rate depends on many factors - the age of the couple, the indication and the individual medical findings. If it doesn't work straight away and couples have had a second or third unsuccessful attempt, it's time to carry out further investigations. For this reason, we have founded our new center of expertise for implantation - the implantation center.
Medical director: Univ. Prof. Dr. Andreas Obruca
"Most couples significantly overestimate their chances of success - if it doesn't work out after the 1st or 2nd attempt, they are naturally disappointed and may give up too early. However, continuing the fertility journey and making a 3rd or 4th attempt is worthwhile in most cases, as confirmed by study data."

If couples have already had two or, at the latest, three unsuccessful IVF attempts, they should not start the next attempt immediately, but should carry out further investigations. We have set up our new center of expertise for implantation - the implantation center - especially for these couples.
At the implantation centrt, we offer an individual and comprehensive assessment of other possible factors that are important for implantation. These examinations focus specifically on the development of the embryo in the laboratory, the uterus, immunological factors, coagulation and genetics. We then use the newly gained knowledge to offer our couples additional specialized methods and therapies during further attempts in order to increase and improve the pregnancy rate.
Couples undergoing treatment at the Kinderwunschzentrum an der Wien are automatically offered this clarification scheme after a second or third unsuccessful attempt in consultation with our team of doctors.
„It is important to me that couples do not give up too early. Our team is aware that attempts are always a huge psychological, physical and financial burden. However, it's a real pity when we see that couples could have a child if they continue trying and take away their own chance by stopping too early.“ (Prof. Dr. Andreas Obruca)
Have you already had two or three failed attempts at another IVF center and would like to switch to us for new investigations and attempts?
Then we kindly invite you to contact us either by phone or e-mail to arrange a first appointment. We will be happy to help you.
In the months leading up to the establishment of our implantation center, we launched a survey among our patients (we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part). The aim was to find out how high a couple estimated their chances of becoming pregnant on their first IVF attempt and how many attempts would be necessary in total before a pregnancy was achieved. The results surprised us:
- Around a quarter of all respondents estimated their chances of conceiving on their 1st IVF attempt at 60% or more (answers of up to 100%).
- On average, respondents thought that they would need 2.6 attempts.
- The best assessment was in the <30 age group, while the >40 year olds overestimated their chances the most.
The following table shows how much the assessment of couples in all age groups (with the exception of <30 year olds) deviates from the actual pregnancy rate:
Couples who start their fertility journey with us naturally hope to get pregnant on their first attempt - and we hope so too! However, the pregnancy rate depends on many factors, such as the age of the couple, the indication and the findings. The diagram above from our survey clearly shows that in almost all age groups there is a gap between the actual pregnancy rate per transfer and the couples' estimates. This shows how much the possibilities of reproductive medicine are overestimated.
"Most couples significantly overestimate their chances of success - if it doesn't work after the 1st or 2nd attempt, they are naturally disappointed and may give up too early. However, continuing the fertility journey and making a 3rd or 4th attempt is worthwhile in most cases, as confirmed by the data from the German IVF register." (Prof. Dr. Andreas Obruca)
It is not for nothing that the IVF fund supports couples under certain criteria with a total of 4 attempts per pregnancy. The data from the German IVF register also shows some encouraging results: after the 4th attempt with a successful embryo transfer, 2 out of 3 couples (= 67.1%) have become pregnant.
For most couples, a fertility journey is a rollercoaster of emotions between hope and fear, trust and scepticism, happiness and sadness. We accompany you on your journey and support you as best we can. In addition to our fertility treatments, we offer you free counselling from our psychotherapist Eveline Leitl, MSc.
„Studies have shown that couples who are emotionally stressed and have not sought psychotherapeutic support for their treatment drop out of the fertility journey sooner. It is therefore very important to me to provide you with the right tools so that you can embark on this journey stronger and with good resources.“ (Eveline Leitl, MSc)
