Diagnostics of the fallopian tubes

The fallopian tubes are the connection between the uterus and the ovary, where fertilization of the egg cell by the sperm cell takes place. Blocked fallopian tubes, for example due to infections, operations or endometriosis, can be a cause of infertility.

HyCoSy (hysterosalpingocontrast sonography) is a diagnostic procedure to check the patency of the fallopian tubes. Patients describe it as being less painful and more comfortable than a fallopian tube X-ray (with contrast medium). The HyCoSy is performed by our team of doctors.

The HyCoSy uses ultrasound and a highly echogenic fluid (in our case ExEm® Foam) to examine the patency of the fallopian tubes. After thorough disinfection of the vagina, a catheter is carefully positioned in the cervix. Under ultrasound control, the correct position is checked and the ExEm® Foam gel is flushed into the uterine cavity. After the uterine cavity has been visualised, the contrast medium is flushed further through the fallopian tubes. Under ultrasound vision, it is checked whether the liquid runs through the fallopian tubes and flows into the abdominal cavity. You can follow this on our ultrasound monitor.

Advantages to methods such as the fallopian tube X-ray (HSG) or laparoscopy (LSK):

  • Possible directly at our Kinderwunschzentrum an der Wien
  • largely painless and low-risk procedure
  • Much less impact on the body
  • no exposure to X-rays
  • no anaesthesia necessary

The HyCoSy examination must be paid for privately, as the health insurance does not cover these costs. However, since 2023, the HSG (X-ray examination) is also no longer paid for by the health insurance. You can find the costs for the HyCoSy here.

As testing the patency of the fallopian tubes is associated with slight pain and costs, we recommend that all heterosexual couples first have the sperm quality analysed by means of a partner's spermiogram!

If the spermiogram results show that the partner has limited sperm quality, it may be necessary to go straight to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which would make the examination of the fallopian tubes superfluous.
