25,925 babies through IVF in Austria since 2000

20 years of IVF fund

Austria is celebrating the 20-year success story of the IVF fund, which was set up in 2000 to finance artificial insemination. A total of 25,925 babies have been born through IVF treatment in Austria since the institution was founded. In 2019 alone, around 11,000 IVF attempts were carried out and supported by the IVF fund. Our center has been the largest partner of the IVF Fund for years and we carry out every second treatment supported by the IVF Fund in Vienna.

7,131 couples made use of financial support from the IVF fund in 2019. In the previous year, a total of 11,028 IVF treatments were supported by the IVF Fund in Austria - that is 50% more than ten years ago. "We are delighted that the IVF fund is providing financial support to more and more couples who wish to have children each year," explains Univ. Prof. Dr. Andreas Obruca, head and founder of the Kinderwunschzentrum an der Wien and President of the Austrian IVF Society. He continues: “We too see the trend towards late motherhood confirmed. Couples always decide later to have a child. ”Most women are between 31 and 35 years old when they try IVF (37.8%), around one in three is already between 36 and 40 - and the trend is rising.

More and more successful singleton pregnancies through artificial insemination

Reproductive medicine has come a long way since the IVF Fund was founded. Successes such as the increase in pregnancy rates or the constant reduction in the twin rate are important goals to which the fertility centers are increasingly meeting. In 2019, a third of the women treated were already happy about a successful pregnancy, of which 92.8% were singleton pregnancies, 7% were twins and 0.2% were triplets. Through the increasingly sought-after “single embryo transfer”, the twin rate has been reduced by 17% in the past 20 years.

Couples from Lower Austria also trust Viennese Fertility Centers

Most IVF treatments are carried out in the Austrian capital: more than a quarter of all artificial inseminations in Austria are carried out in Vienna. Couples from the countryside also turn to the Viennese Fertility Centers for their Fertility Journey. In 2019, more than half of the Lower Austrian patients had their IVF treatment carried out in Vienna.

55.1% of the causes of infertility lie with men

The annual report confirms another trend: "The causes of infertility are 55.1% in men, 14.8% in women and in 30.1% of cases in both partners," explains Obruca. Currently 10-15% of all couples are involuntarily childless.
