The A-Z of fertility treatment

Everything you need to know

The topic of fertility treatment is very complex and extensive. Especially when you are dealing with it for the first time, you quickly feel overwhelmed by all the technical terms.

Our fertility lexicon from A-Z covers all the important topics and terms that you will come across again and again on your fertility journey. We have also created a section with the most frequently asked questions of our patients. However, we are always happy to provide you with help and advice and answer any questions you may have in a personal first consultation.

SmartSelect

SmartSelect is a particularly protective method of sperm preparation. The sperm migrate through a fine membrane, similar to the natural passage through the cervix. Only the most motile and intact sperm make it through. This:

  • reduces exposure to harmful oxygen radicals
  • minimises mechanical stress (as less centrifugation is necessary)
  • improves the selection of sperm with DNA that is as intact as possible

SmartSelect is particularly suitable for:

  • Abnormalities in the sperm analysis (concentration, motility, morphology)
  • Increased DNA fragmentation index (> 15%)
  • Increased oxidative stress
  • Men over 40 or women over 35
  • Use of cryosperm (e.g. donor sperm)
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Smoking
  • Abnormal embryonic development in previous treatments
  • Impaired DNA integrity (e.g. low fertilisation rate in preliminary tests)

SmartSelect cannot be used for severely compromised semen samples (e.g. severe oligo-/asthenozoospermia, cryptozoospermia or TESE material).
