We have refuted the myth that seat heaters impair sperm production. In fact, the opposite is the case.
Vienna, 28th of December 2015; The Kinderwunschzentrum Goldenes Kreuz interviewed 997 men on their lifestyle as part of their appointment for sperm testing. One of the questions was the use of seat heating in the car. “Many years it was thought that seat heaters in cars were responsible for overheating of the testicles and were thus considered sperm killers. However, no comprehensive studies exist on this topic. This was our incentive to question our patients on their usage of seat heating and then to contrast it with the spermiogram results”, explains medical director Univ. Prof. Andreas Obruca.
Best results for lovers of seat heaters
The evaluation of the data showed surprising results: of those who never used seat heating 46% had a normal fertile test result. Of the occasional users 53% had ordinary results. However, of the men who frequently used seat heating 62%, so almost two thirds, showed good sperm quality.
For Prof. Obruca this means the myth that seat heating has a negative impact on male fertility can finally be refuted. “Although our data shows a positive influence on sperm results we cannot yet recommend the use of seat heaters as a “therapeutic” method to improve sperm quality. Further research is still necessary”.
Lifestyle factors make sperm cells fit or lazy
Other lifestyle factors, however, have a clear positive or negative effect on male fertility. If the wish for a child is present we recommend a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, whole wheat products and healthy fat as well as a reduction in the consumption of red meat, sugar and alcohol. Smoking and obesity can also inhibit the achievement of pregnancy. “It is commonly known that women should take folic acid as a vitamin B supply before and during pregnancy. Meanwhile, we have reason to believe that vitamins from the B-complex also have a positive effect on sperm quality”, explains reproductive medicine specialist Prof. Obruca.
We advise our patients individually on their lifestyle. At the start of a treatment we discuss the couple’s life situation and offer improvements and assistance.
