Guide to your first consultation

Step 1 - Donor sperm and other possible reasons

A treatment for lesbian couples always requires the use of a donor sperm. After the amendment of the Austrian Reproductive Medicine Law in 2015 the use of a donor sperm is possible for heterologous inseminations and in-vitro fertilization (IVF)! For us it is extremely important to receive your complete medical findings in order to find out if a medical problem (obstruction of fallopian tubes, PCO syndrome, endometriosis) or a reduced ovarian reserve exists. By clicking on the icons you can read more about the topics!

Donor from our sperm bank

Our institute has its own donor sperm bank. This means that we know all our donors personally and conducted the medical clarification directly at the Kinderwunschzentrum. The selection takes place according to certain criteria, the allocation is conducted by our employees supervising the sperm donor program.

Donor organized by patient

It is possible that you come to the Kinderwunschzentrum with your “own” donor and we will test him according to all the legal requirements. If all tests are positive and he is a suitable donor you can use his sperm for your treatment. The use of donor sperm from international sperm banks is forbidden due to legal requirements in Austria.

Obstruction of fallopian tubes

If your wish for a child has been unfulfilled for more than a year it might be possible that your fallopian tubes are obstructed or damaged.

PCO syndrome

PCOS is the most common female hormonal dysfunction during the fertile years and affects 5 to 10% of women..

With this disease, the cells of the uterine endometrium are also found outside of the uterine cavity. This can lead to pain and destruction of tissue.

Reduced ovarian reserve / post ovarian failure

For women with post ovarian failure or those having a reduced ovarian reserve due to past diseases, the egg donation may be a suitable treatment.

A healthy cell has 46 chromosomes which hold within them the complete genetic information. In rare cases a defect in this information exists.

Psychotherapeutic care

We highly recommend a psychotherapeutic consultation with our psychotherapists for all couples using donor sperm. This will help to decide the exact roles within the future family and to consider possible future scenarios together.

Step 2 - What are the possible treatment options?

The following methods are the most commonly used treatment options for lesbian couples in reproductive medicine. The information stated below can never replace the importance of a first consultation in which we choose a suitable treatment based on your individual medical findings. For us it is important that our patients fully understand all the necessary diagnostics and treatment steps as well as being comfortable with the decision for a certain treatment.

Insemination using donor sperm

Lesbian couples often start with an insemination treatment, but only if no other factor (obstruction of fallopian tubes, PCO syndrome or endometriosis) or a reduced ovarian reserve exists.

In-vitro fertilization using donor sperm (HIVF)

In vitro fertilization means fertilization of the egg cells with the donor sperm outside of the body. After the embryo has developed it is implanted into the uterus where it continues to develop.

Supporting methods for HIVF

In cases of nidation or fertilization failures or disorders in embryo development we offer you supporting methods in order to increase the success of your treatment.

Step 3 - Your way to the first consultation

I look forward to be hearing from you!

In the waiting period for the first consultation you will have enough time to conduct the necessary examinations. We kindly ask you to send us all the medical findings at the latest 10 days before your appointment (Important: Your test results must not be older than 6 months):

Why you need a notary deed

The Austrian Reproductive Medicine Law requires the conduction of a notary deed when donor sperm is used. The purpose of this document is to regulate the parenthood for the future child.

Financial support from the IVF fund

The fund subsidizes 70% of the costs for IVF treatment for a maximum of 4 attempts if all requirements are met. The remaining deductible of 30% for treatment and medication costs has to be covered by the couple.
