A 65-year-old woman gave birth to quadruplets in Berlin after undergoing treatment with egg donation. Because the children were born in the 26th week of pregnancy there is a high risk of long-term damage at least in some of the newborn babies.
“This treatment is to be opposed“ says Univ.Prof.Dr. Heinz Strohmer, medical director of the Kinderwunschzentrum, „as on the one hand an unjustifiable number of embryos was transferred and, on the other hand, any fertility treatment should be omitted at such an advanced age.”
In Austria, for logical reasons, there is an age limit of 45 years for such treatments and the number of transferable embryos is also restricted. Sadly, there are still doctors abroad who know no limits. “The results are often as catastrophic as can be seen in this case“, emphasizes Univ.Prof.Dr. Heinz Strohmer.
